  • displaying light cache `calc phase` uses huge memory and crashes max

    hi,
    vray 3.3
i`m rendering a large image 30000x16875. i have gi on and it kept crashing.
i tracked it down to the light cache `show calc phase` option. when on it spiked way beyond my memory (32gb) and crashed max.
when light cache `show calc phase` was switched off it used only 6gb through light cache pass then 10gb to render the image.
is this normal ? just displaying the light cache uses so much memory ? seems a bit weird.
obviously the answer is to turn if off but is this a bug or something ?
    thanks
    ant

It's normal for now; I've been meaning to detect if the preview would require more than a certain amount and turn it off in that case - hopefully will be able to fix this for the next patch.

I would imagine such big resolutions might be a real problem. I've never rendered that high-res but I think there were some tricks. For example rendering in regions and then stitching them together. There were also some scripts that do this automatically. You might want to check these out.

        There's a much easier way:

Actually it seems to render fine as long as i have show calc phase turned off, and using DR will help speed it up. I don`t like turning off a visible preview to render to disk, you really need to see what`s rendering to know if there`s any errors that need tweaking etc. Rendering blind and reviewing later seems like a bad choice to me. Anyways thanks for the replies.
